I’m amazed by Turkmenistan, it’s a very beautiful country and I hope to visit soon! These are 5 things I love about Turkmenistan.

Men Türkmenistany gowy görýärin we ýakyn wagtda bu ajaýyp ýurda baryp görmek isleýärin.

1:  ASHGABAT

Turkmenistan is not a typical tourist destination! shgabat was recently noted by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most white marble-clad buildings in the world
Turkmenistan is amazing! Ashgabat was recently noted by the Guinness Book of World Records as having the most white marble-clad buildings in the world

The capital of Turkmenistan of Ashgabat is the first thing to see. The city is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the whitest city on the planet. 543 buildings are built in the same style-they are lined with white marble. Absolutely beautiful architecture and extremely clean.

2. The ancient city of Nisa

Nisa is stunning and full of history

If you drive 18 kilometers west of Ashgabat, you can meet the remains of the ancient city of Nisa. The monuments are protected and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The exhibits found during the excavations are kept in the State Cultural Center of Turkmenistan.

3. The Ruins Of Merv

Merv is very beautiful and should be visited in Turkmenistan

In the south-eastern part of Turkmenistan, there is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, older than Nisa. These are the ruins of the ancient city of Merv. Its top is still decorated with a brick dome. The items found during the excavations are kept in the United Museum of History. I LOVE THIS COUNTRY! 🇹🇲❤

4. Fiery Gas Crater of Karakum Desert

Fiery Gas Crater of Karakum Desert is amazing

The place of the Fiert Gas Crater of Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan is remembered for a lifetime. Darvaza means “gate” in the national language. The gas crater 90 km from the village of Yerbent is very unique. Anyone who comes here at night becomes an eyewitness to an incredible sight: in the middle of the sands, in pitch darkness, an orange fiery light breaks out from under the ground.

5. Traditional cuisine

People travel to Turkmenistan to eat delicious meat and fish. Most of all, the locals love chicken and lamb. The restaurants serve game, goat and camel meat. Milk is drunk by camel and sheep. The serving plate in Turkmenistan is prepared at every step. Lamb meat is finely chopped, fried in lard and canned.

I love Turkmenistan and I hope to visit this beautiful country soon.  Bu ýurt haýran galdyryjy we ýakyn wagtda görmek isleýärin.

The prices to fly in and out from Istanbul in Turkey are quite good and easy and that is what we are going to do!

This is the flight we will be taking to Turkmenistan and back from Istanbul!

WE ARE GOING TO TURKMENISTAN – GUS1THEGO EXPEDITION – 26TH OF JUNE – 30TH OF JUNE 2023

Turkmenistan is one of the most UNIQUE countries in the World.. There’s simply no place like Turkmenistan!

WHY VISIT TURKMENISTAN?

I mean, why not? One of the most unique and isolated countries you can explore on the planet. Enjoying a somewhat unique reputation as, not only the least explored country along the old Silk Road, but also probably the most eccentric of the Central Asian republics, modern Turkmenistan is very much the product of its ex president, Saparmurat Niyazov, otherwise known as Turkmenbashi. Spotting a gold statue of its former ruler on practically every corner, the country is awash with towns and portraits dedicated to one of the world’s most flamboyant and repressive dictators. Turkmenistan has a lot to offer!

Much of the country is covered by the large, empty and very hot Kara Kum or Black Sands Desert, which for centuries was Turkmenistan’s best defence against a long list of outsiders, adventurers and encroaching armies.

A visit to Turkmenistan holds the promise of a journey into a rich and colourful land still totally untouched by tourism, where strangers are merely friends that haven’t been introduced yet. Can’t wait to check out this special country with you!

Socotra Expedition (gus1thego)

Socotra Island is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled islands in the world. The island is well known for its Dragon Blood Trees and its surreal landscapes full of towering sand dunes and deep canyons, making it one of the most beautiful UNESCO sites in the world. Socotra is the perfect definition of remote island. Closest to Yemen and Somalia, its location has made it somehow an oasis in turbulent waters. BUT DON’T WORRY, IT’S SAFE TO VISIT! Azure beaches, crystal clear water for snorkelling and diving, healthy corals full of fish and thousands of endemic species of flora and fauna make it a unique ecosystem. This is one of the most mind-blowing spots on earth!

Trip dates: October 4th-11th 2021. Total of 8 days / 7 nights.

Itinerary

Monday the 4th of October 10 am > Abu Dhabi – Socotra and back

Day 1: Arrival on Socotra, Dihamari Marine Protected Area

We will pick you up at the airport and transport you to the restaurant in Hadibo lunch. After, we will drive to nearby Dihamri marine protected area. It boasts with one of the richest coral reefs on the archipelago. You can relax on the beach in palm leaf huts and swim and snorkel in Dihamri Bay. Snorkeling gear can be hired there. Marine species you will see underwater include: Parrotfish, Moray eel, Rays, Sea urchins, if you are lucky you will meet turtles. Divers can also use the services of Dihamri Diving center and go for a dive in Dihamri or another of superb diving spots of Socotra.

Day 2: Homhil

Homhil is a place you will remember. Stopover at Qaria Lagoon.
Today we will make our way to Homhil protected area, taking in the fabulous sceneries of deep ravines and plains along the way. We will stop at Qaria Lagoon en-route. Qaria is the largest lagoon on the island and we can hopefully see Flamingos, Herons and Greenshank, amongst others. Once at Homhil, we can walk a selection of trails, one of which takes us to a viewpoint where there is a natural pool and a view village below on the plain and of the sea. Homhil is home to many Dragons Blood trees, the resin of which is collected, used and traded by the people of Socotra. Frankincense trees are also prevalent here and deserve a close look.
Dinner and overnight  at Homhil outside the campsite.

Day 3: Hoq Cave/ Arher freshwater creek and beach

The day begins with an early morning visit to the traditional village of Erissel. Here on the easternmost tip of the island we will interact with locals, witness the outstanding local fishermen’s activities and visit family’s house for a Socotri chai.

After departing the village we will head for cave exploration. There are many cave systems throughout the island thanks to its karstic nature and limestone plateaus. The huge mouth of the Hoq cave is reached by a 2 hours hike. Here we’ll be rewarded by a spectacular underground channel. The cave has yet to be fully explored, speleologists have determined its length as 10 km or more. We will venture 2 km into the belly of the cave admiring stalactites, stalagmites, ancient writings and subterranean water supplies.

After spelunking we will return to Arher – the afternoon is yours to relax in the surrounding serenity or join another hiking to the top of the plateau. The hike to the mountain ridge offers a bird’s-eye-view of both sides of the northern and southern shorelines. A highlight of the trip unique to our tour. Afterward we will dine and camp once again at the stunning Arher beach.

Day 4: Defarhu / Mek Sandy Beach, Dagub Cave, Hayf and Zahaq Sand Dunes

After breakfast we travel to the south of the island, with visits to villages along the way. Our first destination is Amak beach where we can swim in the clear water of the Indian Ocean. For lunch we will go to Dagub cave, which overlooks a scattering of traditional villages below. The cave itself is of interest as there are many stalactites, stalagmites and pools of water that has seeped through the rock over time. We will then witness the colossal sand dunes of Hayf and Zahek which have been pushed up against the mountainside by the seasonal winds of Socotra. If you are feeling especially fit, you can climb the dunes for a view that is truly worth the effort. Dinner and overnight camp at Amek beach

Day 5: Diksam Plateau / Derhur Canyon / Fermhin Forest

We leave the coast heading to Diksam plateau, the true home of the Dracaena Cinnabari. Small settlements are hidden around the crevasses of the valley where nomadic Bedouin herdsmen will welcome us on the edge of a gorge: the most spectacular limestone landscape on the island. The gorge drops 700 meters to the valley floors, with views providing a remarkable atmosphere of prehistory.

We continue through the unique and oddly shaped Fermhin forest: where Socotra’s iconic Dragon’s Blood abound everywhere! Here we will get to know the famous resin and its miraculous properties, while local children seek cover under the upside down umbrella-shaped canopies. As the road descends 400 meters into Wadi Dirhur, we plunge into a profound chasm slicing through the granite. Here we enjoy one of the island greatest secrets: an oasis surrounding freshwater pool with natural waterslide.

After filling our cameras with as many pictures of the Dragon’s Blood Trees as we can, we will continue by road towards Derhur Canyon. After Dixam Plateau, the road plunges 400 m (1312 ft) into a profound chasm slicing through the granite, giving a completely different atmosphere from the airy heights of the plateau. The lush canyon floor has been planted with palm trees, in the shade of which lay Bruce’s Green Pigeons and Laughing Doves. We can refresh ourselves by swimming in the wadi’s deep pool, escaping the midday heat.

Dinner and overnight in Diksam plateau.

Day 6: Qalansyia/ Detwah Lagoon/ The Golden Beach of Shuab

How does it feel to wake up on such a remote and idyllic beach?

In the morning, we will continue to neighboring Detwah Lagoon, which is a marine protected area renowned for its magic landscape. You will be charmed by a white sandy tongue surrounded by turquoise waters of the bay. This surely is one of the best views on the island. You can jump in the shallow sea there and enjoy the paradise. Only be careful with sting rays that can be seen in the lagoon. There is also an array of sea birds to be seen in the lagoon.
We can take a boat to Shuaab area to see the dolphins playing and swim in near a very pure and clean long sandy beach, once arrive Shuaab area we can have a look on the mangrove area. Be sure to look out for Spinner Dolphins along the way. Cormorants also frequent the area. Once at Shu’ab we will have lunch and the afternoon is free to swim and enjoy this pristine beach setting, complete with mangroves. In late afternoon we take the boat ride back to Qalansyia. Line fishing may also be possible from the boat, if you want fish for dinner of course.

The legendary Mount Kilimanjaro from below

I’m Coming To Tanzania, Are You?

I’ll be in Tanzania in December 2019 and therefore I thought it was time to do something cool! Why not arrange a luxury charity hike for my friends to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro? Much cheaper than normally? Yep! You’ll pay only $1899 if you book in August and $1999 from 1st of September 2019. Sleeping in tents?

No… sleeping in huts! This is a luxury charity trip!

You’ll be sleeping in huts. Much better than the freezing cold tents at night

The Perfect Time And The Perfect Conditions

I’ve talked to the guy I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro with for the first time, Daniel, about doing a Kilimanjaro-hike and I wanted it to be just as perfect as the Kilimanjaro climb I had.. Even better! Forget all about the cold tents at night, you’ll be sleeping in huts, so we make sure you’re well rested and ready to walk ‘pole pole’ (slowly) during the way, which are key words for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Furthermore the trip is in December (Tanzanian summer time) with close to no rain.. Perfect conditions!

Me and my guide John.. He went to the top +100 times. Specialist!

You Need A Team Of Specialists

Me and my guide John literally became best friends on my hike, it’s amazing what 5 days together can do! You need not only good people around you to succeed, but you also need the local experts! It’s important on a mountain like Mount Kilimanjaro to have the knowledge! You can buy this trip from American third part’s companies who’ll overcharge you badly with prices between $6000-8000.. It’s not needed to pay this kind of absurd money to people who don’t even know the mountain that well.. Trust me!

You need local experts! And you’ll get a special connection with the whole team through the days

High Succes Rate In Reaching The Top Of Mt. Kilimanjaro

I can assure you it’s NOT necessary to pay BIG money for a TOP service here! Daniel and his crew has a really high success rates, actually +95% in reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro! All of the guides have been to the top a lot, and know how to help you in every possible situation. They know the weather conditions, know how to acclimatize perfectly so you can avoid altitude sickness, etc! Top guidance and the most amazing food (from the best cook😉.) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ service.

Couldn’t put a single complain on my trip when reaching the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, and therefore I’m happy to arrange this trip with Daniel, who I did my first hike with and who has some amazing reviews.

Ready To Go? Climb Kilimanjaro For Charity

What I’m most excited about is the ‘Project Fee’ for Tanzanian orphan kids in the orphanage I’ve helped +4 years, when you’ll climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Ask any of the kids in the orphanage what the most important thing in life is, and they’ll answer: “School.” So the project fee is mandatory and the $99 Project Fee goes exclusively to pay 20 Tanzanian orphan kids school fees.

Miss them so much!

You’ll be climbing Africa’s highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro, while you’ll help kids in need.. Help them to go to school, while you’re having the time of your life on this epic mountain! That’s pretty awesome, right?!

Mariamu.. She loves school and dreams of being a teacher

You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. Sitting home and want to go travel? I understand you and I’ll now tell you the EXACT reason why you should pack your stuff and go traveling ✈But how? It’s expensive, right?” There’s a solution to make it possible!

At Taj Mahal, India

My Realizations From Traveling

I’ve made some realizations during my last 7 years of traveling, living a lot of the time out of a backpack, which I’m really grateful for I’ve experienced! When going back to Denmark, I sometimes had a place to stay and sometimes not, having to move all of my things from one place to a storage room or crash friends or even my parents place. It’s difficult to move around all the time with too much material stuff you have to carry with you. For me too much stuff doesn’t really match with my travels around the World.

Teyateyaneng in Lesotho

I know if I want to travel, I have to drag my stuff along or make sure it’s in a safe place before I can leave. It’s annoying, especially if you have a lot of things! I’ve seen the material possessions I have decrease more over the years. When I was younger it was mostly about impressing friends with expensive things, but now I mostly don’t care about material stuff, except clothing to some extent, and even if I see a nice car, I think of expenses, rather than how awesome it looks! Working more hours to afford it = Less travel.

No way!

Chitzen Itza, Mexico

I still have some things I’m not willing to let go off (Airpods, Sony A6000 Camera, Osprey Fairpoint 40 L Backpack, etc.. Basically these 20 things in this link, but I’ve become more of a minimalist nonetheless by traveling the World over the years. I now have more stories to tell and less stuff to show.

Holding my first travel speech in Erbil, Iraq

Your Choices?

Ask yourself: Did I really buy this Mercedes car or that Rolex watch, because I genuinely love it so much? Am I so truly passionate about this thing and is it TOTALLY for me, not for others? Or did I actually buy it to fill out an emotional gap I have, or maybe to impress a person I don’t even like? Why did I spent money I don’t have, now having to work extra hours, having less hours to do what I really love? Everybody is probably guilty on buying something to impress others, to boost their ego for a short period, for the sake of getting compliments and mostly fake recognition from their friends. Maybe it’s time to change.

Hvar Waterfalls, Croatia

Will Material Stuff Make You Happy?

Most people have this false belief that the more they own, the happier they’ll be. Material stuff will NEVER make you happy! Imagine having the mansion, The TVs.. But having no real friends or family? How would your life be? So many people are slaves to their stuff. But the truth is the more you have, the more you’ll have to manage and worry about. It complicates life.

Walking around freely in North Korea

Have Some Memories

When you go on a vacation, you’ll remember it for years. Those unique experiences become the story you’ll tell forever and a big part of you and I can assure you that nobody will remember your expensive, yet uncomfortable designer couch or $10.000 flat-screen you just bought in 8 years from now. It’ll be garbage!

On the other hand you’ll always have the memories to look back on from traveling.

It’s a brother-thing! Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso

Shoes And Bed Are Kind Of Important

All being said: Choose your shoes and bed wisely. That’s were you spent most of your life and I really love my travel shoes, most of all the Nike Air Max 97 (on the pic) or the Nike Airmax 270. Both perfect travel shoes for men! Just thoughts from me on a Friday evening, preparing myself slowly in Sweden to go back for a new ride in Africa. Starting with going back to Ethiopia and then I’ll see where the roads will take me..

Dubai, Abu Dhabi

Do you agree with some of these thoughts? Guilty, not guilty?

There are so many stunning cities in Europe, and some of the cities on THIS list are not on my FAVORITE cities in Europe. However these 3 places in Europe left me with deep fascination of its beauty and colors and are for me the most stunning places to go and watch in Europe (if you can avoid the tourist masses!)

3. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik is a beautiful, colorful city in southern Croatia fronting the Adriatic Sea. All houses with red roofs and it’s looks stunning from above. It’s known for its Old Town, encircled with massive stone walls you can walk on completed in the 16th century. The place is well-known as the “King’s Landing” in Game of Thrones.

Furthermore there are a lot of activities you can do in Dubrovnik. I met my cousin by a strange incident and we took a long scenic kayak-trip around the cliffs and inside the massive caves. To round it off I went for some cliff jumping.. So much fun. Dubrovnik is getting more crowded now than when I went in 2017, but it’s still one of the most stunning places in Europe for sure! With lots of cool activities to do!

Cliff jumping in Dubrovnik, Croatia

2. Cinque Terre

In the Liguria region in Italy you’ll find Cinque Terre, laying on the rugged Italian Riviera coastline. 5 small centuries-old seaside villages with super colorful houses and vineyards cling to steep terraces. Absolutely scenic and with harbors filled with fishing boats. The Sentiero Azzurro cliffside hiking trail links the villages, but you can also take a small train which goes through the villages every 30 min. I went to all of the 5 villages, but I fell completely in love with Manarola, which was my favourite of the villages.

Manarola, Cinque Terre, Italy. (@gustavrosted)

1. Oia, Santorini

Oia is an iconic coastal town on the northwestern tip of Santorini. For me going to Oia was top of my bucket-list. Ask my parents and my friends, I’ve been stalking this place for a long time and even had a background photo on my computer of this picturesque Greek place for a year.

I love the whitewashed houses carved into the rugged clifftops overlooking a vast caldera filled with water.

This place is something special and if you can avoid the tourist crowds, a sunset view here is very hard to beat! I still remember having an extremely expensive lunch on a restaurant here with one of the best sights I’ve yet experienced. I ate that Greek salad extremely slowly and there’s a good reason why. So stunning!

These are 3 of my favourite places in Europe that came to mind right now sitting here in Stockholm Airport, but I have so many others also. Europe is a fascinating continent and even though I’ve been to every country and capital here (most +2 times), I feel like I still have a lot more to experience in Europe!

What’s your favourite places in Europe?

Welcome to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden! Stockholm is an awesome city break destination. Are you planning to go?! Here’s why you should!

Remember to download the free Swedish transportation app ‘SL’ to get around Stockholm in bus and metro. You pay 45 SEK ($4,5) and you’re able to use the ticket for 75 min in any bus/metro. Super easy!

Stockholm Is A Must-Go Destination

Stockholm is made on 14 islands and with more than 50 major bridges connecting the different parts, which make the city unique. After spending a few days here on my 16th visit to Sweden, I wanted to share with you ‘The 7 Unmissable Things To Do In Stockholm.’ An absolute MUST-GO destination!

Spending nearly 3 days here in end of July, 2019, I can tell you already the weather is not Stockholm’s greatest attribute. Nonetheless it’s a really cozy place with lots of charming streets and places that you’ll love!

Weather – Is Stockholm Cold?

I was literally two seconds away from not bringing a jacket to Sweden on my 1-hour flight from Copenhagen to Stockholm, thinking “hey, it’s Swedish summer,” but in less than seconds before leaving to the Airport, I made the decision to bring a jacket. Smart choice! Even though July/August are Sweden’s absolutely best summer months, Stockholm is located pretty north and bringing a jacket here is recommended in my opinion, unless you’re a true Swedish Viking which I’m not apparently. Danish viking though!

Shielded From The Worst Of The Arctic Weather?

Stockholm in sunshine is absolutely tremendous. The capital is actually shielded from the worst of the arctic weather by the mountains of Norway, so the weather here is more pleasant than foreigners first think.

Summers typically average from 17 to 25 degrees Celsius (63 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit,) which usually feels a bit colder with the wind in this extensive Baltic Sea archipelago. Winters are usually cloudy with rain and snowfall, with January and February being the coldest months, with the average minimum temperature of -4°C (24 Fahrenheit) and with some freezing storms moving in over the capital.

Walking around the stunning streets in Stockholm, Sweden @gustavrosted

7 UNMISSABLE Things To Do In Stockholm

This is the list of the ‘7 Unmissable Things To Do In Stockholm,’ and it’s the most perfect inspiration for a few days in the Swedish capital to keep you busy!

1. Gamla Stan

Stortorget Square, Gamla Stan, Stockholm, Sweden

Begin your trip by going back to Stockholm’s roots at one of Europe’s great medieval centres, spread over three small islands. The bustling, compact island of Gamla Stan is the city’s old town, with cobbled streets and colorful 17th- and 18th-century buildings, yet still the Old Town is actually dated back to the 13th Century.

Gamla Stan is home to the medieval Storkyrkan Cathedral and the Royal Palace, the King’s official residence. Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s original city centre, and with its glorious labyrinth of charming cobbled streets, alleyways and rust-colored town houses, it’s one of my favourite places in Stockholm!

Walking around the Gamla Stan Area, Stockholm

2. Skansen

Skansen is the World’s oldest open air museum, and it attracts more than 1.3 million visitors each year, which is a very high number for Swedish standards.

Skansen was founded in 1891 by Artur Hazelius to provide an insight into how Swedes once lived. You can easily spend a day here and not see it all. Around 150 traditional houses and other exhibits at this hilltop – it’s meant to be ‘Sweden in miniature’, complete with villages, nature, commerce and industry.

Note that prices and opening hours and days vary seasonally; check the website before you go.

3. Royal Palace

With more than 600 rooms Stockholm’s Royal Palace is up there with the largest palaces in Europe.

The King of Sweden still lives here, most royal events and receptions happen at the palace and all the various departments associated with the royal family operate in these plush environs. Furthermore there are 5 museums to go and see.

4. Vasa Museum

Not the biggest fan of museums usually, but the Vasa Museum and this awesome relic from the 17th-century of the all-conquering King Gustavus Adolphus is super cool! It’s been revived at this museum in the west shore of Djurgården, Stockholm.

The Vasa was a 64-gun warship that went down on its first voyage in 1628. It remained in the deep for 33 years, until it was lifted to the surface and slowly was restored. The Vasa is only 17th-century ship of this scale to make it to the present day, which is indeed fascinating. The only negative thing is you can’t get a boat ride in ‘The Vasa’ in the plenty of canals in Stockholm and feel like an old Swedish pirate! Damn it!

5. Gröna Lund

Djurgården is also the scene for Sweden’s oldest amusement park, and although Gröna Lund first opened in 1883 it’s very much up to date.

New roller coasters are unveiled every few years, like the state-of-art “Insane” on which you’ll spend half the ride upside down.

Another, “Eclipse” is a swing ride more than 120 metres in height.

6. Södermalm

Södermalm, where Greta Garbo grew up, has a few ultra-cool neighborhoods with quirky shops and interesting places to go out.

Try SoFo (South of Folkungagatan) for one-of-a-kind designer boutiques, vintage shops and hip restaurants and cafes. Södermalm is, after all, more than just trendy shops, cozy cafés and some of the best bars in Stockholm. Walk around in Södermalm in Stockholm – I’ll recommend you a nice walk in the sunshine.

Stockholm is one of the coolest cities to walk around.. In sunshine!

Nytorget Square here is a fun night out in summer. Yes, I said it! Check it out!

7. Stockholm Public Library

The last thing on my ‘Top 7 List of Things To Do in Stockholm’ is with a free entry and what a place!

The Stockholm Public Library is one of the World’s most beautiful libraries, and changed the city’s relationship with books when it opened in 1928. That’s down to the monumental rotunda at the top of the building.

Gunnar Asplund designed the stunning library, and it’s held as a shining example of the Swedish Classicist movement. Again there’s no fee to enter, and many of the titles are in English if you’re in need of a quiet, rainy day activity, which of course can happen in Stockholm!

I hope you you will have a perfect time in Stockholm with great weather and I’ll see you next time, Sweden!

Want to know more about North Korea? These are 20 Interesting Facts that you probably didn’t know about the country! I want to challenge you as well.. How many of these 20 facts did you know BEFORE reading this? Count them and let me know!

1: It’s Year 107, Not 2019

Former leader Kim Il-sung

The year isn’t 2019. The North Korean or Juche calendar was adopted in 1997 and begins with the year of Kim Il-sung’s date of birth (1912 – or Juche I to North Koreans.)

2: The Country Holds “Elections” Every 5 Years

Always with a lot of excitement, North Korea hands out ballots with only one option on them, so votes swing, you guessed it, 100% for the Leader.

3: There Are Few Working Traffic Lights

There are not many traffic lights in North Korea and they have been working off and on for at least seven years. The traffic girls are occasionally sidelined when the traffic lights are working.

4: No North Korea Stamp In Foreign Passports

In North Korea you don’t get a stamp in your passport and it actually makes it a lot easier in any Airport immigration afterwards! You get a separate visa that you have to deliver back when you exit the country.

5: North Korea’s Has The Only One-Star Airline In The World

North Korea has ‘The World’s Only One-Star Airline’, Air Koryo, run by the North Korean Government. See for yourself what it’s like to fly on Air Koryo — the worst airline in the world.

6: World’s Largest Stadium

The Rungnado May Day stadium in North Korea has more than 150,000 seats. To comparison Barcelona’s Camp Nou has a seating capacity of 99,354 and is the largest football stadium in Europe. Wow, just wow!

7: Kim Il-Sung is seen as the ‘Eternal Leader’

Statues of Kim Il Sung and Kim Jong Il

Kim Il-Sung will always be considered North Korea’s Eternal Leader, even though Kim Jong-Un is the Supreme Leader of North Korea now. Kim Il-Sung’s statue is raising the hand in the sky to the left.

8: Pyongyang Is Only For The Elite

Life in Pyongyang, North Korea (@gustavrosted)

The capital Pyongyang, one of North Korea’s only big cities, is home to around three million people, but only the elite.  Only trustworthy, healthy, and loyal citizens can live there.

9: Kim Il-Sung Scammed Sweden For 1000 Cars

Kim Il-Sung scammed Sweden out of 1,000 Volvo 144 sedans in 1974, and to this date North Korea has never made the payment. Now I understand why he had this million dollar smile!

10: One Of The Largest Armies in the World

North Korea has one of the largest armies in the world. It is estimated by the U.S. State Department that they have an active-duty military force of up to 1.2 million personnel.

11: ‘Three Generations of Punishment Policy’

With a North Korean family

There is a ‘three generations of punishment policy’ in North Korea. The offender, along with his next two generations, has to bear the consequences of the offense.

12: North Korea has no taxes.

North Korea is one of the few countries in the world whose residents don’t pay any taxes. Taxation was abolished in 1974 as part of the “old world.” Only organizations and individuals who are making money outside the country are not released from it. However, everything might change soon: it is rumored that the government is planning to reintroduce income tax in the near future.

13: Kim Jong-un Is Unique

In North Korea, it’s officially forbidden to give children the name borne by their Leader. If a child had been named like this before his accession, the parents must urgently change the name!

14: They Have Their Own ‘Intranet’

In Kaesong in the southern part of North Korea. No cars, like walking back in time!

North Korea has their own intranet – “Kwangmyong.” It opened in 2000 and includes a browser, email, news and search capabilities. No open internet as it exists in other parts of the world.

15: North Koreans Are Convinced Korea Is One Country

If you take a political map of the world made in any other country, you’ll see both North and South Korea on it. However, North Koreans are certain that there is only one Korea: any school map shows a united country with the capital of Pyongyang.

16: They Only Have Three TV Channels

There are only 3 TV Channels in North Korea. Which leaves me wondering how many families might be in prison for illegally watching soap operas from South Korea..

17: North Korea Has Death Penalty

Death given are sentenced for distributing pornography, watching movies not approved by the governments and possessing Bibles.

North Korea one of the last six countries to still perform public executions after  Saudi Arabia, Syria, Afghanistan, Iran, and Yemen.

18: Bill Gates Net Worth Is Three Times Larger Than NK

Bill Gates’ net worth is more than three times larger than North Korea’s annual GDP, as of 2017.

19: Almost Impossible To Walk Freely In North Korea

You need a guide to walk around North Korea as a tourist. I was extremely lucky to go during a special time, so I could walk around freely on several occasions. Watch this video on how it was possible for me.

20: Tourism Is A Very Small Part Of The Country’s Economy

Walking around freely in North Korea

Tourism is a very small part of the country’s economy. Due to government restrictions, only around 5,000 Western travelers per year make the trip. To compare London attracted 20.42 million international visitors in 2018. Big difference? Indeed so!

Goodbye North Korea and feel free to check out ‘The 8 Things You Should NEVER Do In North Korea.’

The North Korea Koryo Burger. Is this the most disgusting burger in the World?

Enjoying the infamous, stone cold Koryo Burger and goodbye to NK. Actually thought the burger was worse! 🍔

Take care everybody!

I was close to die two times in 1 week in Liberia. My first time was a near-death experience, which happened when I just arrived to the capital, Monrovia. Here is what happened exactly!

Me and a Liberian guy arriving too late to the border in the evening from Sierra Leone to Liberia

The Way To The Capital Monrovia

First of all I had a tough way to enter Liberia. Being stuck at the border at night time, trying to find a place to sleep, all because of our driver. Read this story: The Shittiest Border Crossing – Sierra Leone to Liberia.

When I finally made my way to the capital Monrovia, I just wished for a nice, enjoyable week in Liberia. Well, not really! But I will return to this.. There was some good vibes in the shared car I was in on our way to Monrovia, but we went out 6 or 7 times to different police check-points on the drive. I knew Liberia had been in 2 civil wars recently, for a total of 14 years, where more than 250,000 Liberians were killed, so I knew this country had been pretty unstable not too long ago.

Me and “The Black Cristiano,” as he introduced himself, from our shared car towards Monrovia

First Look At The Capital Was Shocking

The guy in the blue t-shirt helped me a lot at the check-points, because the police officers usually liked him. He said I was with him, which meant I wasn’t asked too many of the usual questions, wasn’t asked for money or had all of my baggage checked, as I’ve experienced a few others places. That was pretty great! Local friends are good to have.

Now I was close to the capital and I was honestly excited to relax a bit after 30 extremely hectic hours.

My first sight in Monrovia, Liberia

Monrovia, Where Is The Trash-Service?

My first sight of Monrovia was one of the worst I’ve ever seen in a capital. Trash everywhere on the streets and people walking around in this. Even in the car the smell was so bad that we had to hold our noses. I thought the nature had been pretty beautiful on the way to here, and I never judge an entire country on its capital, but Monrovia didn’t make it to my top 20 of capitals around the World – let’s put it that way!

My original plan was I was going to stay in Monrovia, but I had a bit too much of this place already after a few hours, and a friend of mine had a contact in Paynesville, a 45 min drive outside of Monrovia. I thought why not try this.. It could only be better than here! I was going to Monrovia later in the week anyway to fix a visa, so I knew I would have time to explore the good parts of the city too. It was a win-win! I thought…

Near-Death Experience Incoming

The traffic in Monrovia was terrible. Super crowded, no rules, people driving where they wanted to drive, motor bikes and cars everywhere! I thought that because Liberia only had a small population of 5 million people, the country would be pretty smooth with the traffic! Not.. at.. all!

Liberia’s capital Monrovia from above

What concerned me a lot in Monrovia was seeing plenty of damaged cars and motor bikes, I knew there would be a big chance of a road incident here.. No space for small mistakes or a second of inattention!

I counted 5 serious incidents when I arrived in Monrovia, Liberia

No Way Out Of The City – What To Do?

I was on the search for a taxi or a shared ride to Paynesville and it was close to impossible to find a way.. I waited 10 minutes.. Waited 20. All taxis were full of people. I was almost running out of hope, when a young guy on around 19 years of age came to me on his motorbike and asked me: “Where are you going?”

I told him I was going to Paynesville and asked him: “How much?” He started with an absurd price, and I just laughed as I usually do when people are trying to scam me and I pretended I was about to leave, when he said: “How much do you want?” I ended up paying 20% of the price he started with and we were finally off to Paynesville! I’m normally a big fan of taking motor bikes when traveling.. And I can assure you:

THIS ride is the ONE I remember the MOST out of +1000 motor bike rides.. Here’s why!

Driving Through Hell

I jumped on the motor bike and the driver started to drive really fast almost immediately.. I didn’t get to think anything, before he was driving around 80km/h in a compact African city traffic (not the traffic we know from Europe!) with tiny space to pass other cars.

My driver zigzagged through the queues anyway with high speed. It would be too dangerous to stop him, because of the insane traffic we were in and because of the way he was driving without using the brakes…

My driver honked 3 times pr. second and he looked back every 3 seconds in order to look cool I think, I’m not sure why he did that to be fair, but it freaked me out!

Driving Against Trafic

My driver was a wrong-way-driver and drove against traffic most of the time, and we we’re constantly centimeters away from hitting other cars.. He gassed up to 100 km/h. After 20 min of being in survival mode on this motor bike, I was sure it was over! It all happened in a few seconds..

Another motor bike driver drove from the opposite side of the road and was out of a sudden in the lane we were driving in.. We came with full speed.. My life flashed before my eyes. We were literally as close to a collision as you could possibly get. Millimeters from death! A second of silence and then full speed again!

I’ve taken more than 1000 motor bike rides in my life, but this was by far the worst!

Crazy driver.. Don’t ever jump on a motorbike with this guy in Monrovia, Liberia!

My Body Was Shaking – Shock Mode! I Survived

I was thankful for being alive and my whole body was shaking. I was in totally shock mode! My driver even asked me to double the price and took me to his corrupt friends who pretended to be cops by showing their fake Police ID’s to get money out of me.. I got really aggressive at them and to be fair I wasn’t myself for the rest of that day. I paid the guy the firstly agreed-price and escaped the group. I was just grateful I was still a full piece and alive, and couldn’t really focus on anything – I had a lot of anger inside me!

Seconds after the worst motorbike ride EVER in Liberia

After a few hours I met with my friend’s buddy in Paynesville, Liberia, but my thoughts were somewhere else the rest of this day.. I slowly became myself again the next day.

This is what can happen when you throw yourself into a crazy solo ride through West Africa, without your own car or motorbike, just trying to make a way! I know I probably have to be more careful next time..

Hello Liberia. My country number 116

Be careful guys! Always judge the situation.
I can’t believe I was Caught In Shootings And Explosions 6 days after in Liberia.

Take care!
